Dr. Mateo is an Assistant Professor of surgery at the USC School of Medicine and the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreas Surgery at USC University Hospital. He is also Assistant Unit Chief for the Hepatobiliary Division at the Los Angeles County Hospital.

Dr. Mateo completed his general surgery residency and his Multi-Organ Transplantation Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he was involved with the surgical care of adult and pediatric liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowel transplant patients. He is board certified in general surgery and has done a surgical critical care fellowship.

His research interests include the use of molecular biology in the study of Hepatitis C in transplantation. He has studied the role of Hepatocyte Growth Factor in liver transplantation, and is currently involved in the design and implementation of databases for non-transplant hepatic, biliary tract and pancreatic patients.
