A Patient's Guide to Kidney Transplant Surgery

MEDICATIONS

Ganciclovir (Cytovene®)

Purpose:
Ganciclovir is used to prevent or treat cytomegalo virus (CMV) infection.

How to take:

  • Ganciclovir is given intravenously. The first few doses are generally given in the hospital.

  • The transplant team will determine the proper dosage and the length of time a patient should take CYTOVENE.

  • Take plenty of fluids with this medication - check with the transplant team about the amount.

Precautions:

  • Ganciclovir may reduce white blood cell count and lead to increased risk of infection.

  • The benefits of taking Ganciclovir if a patient is pregnant or breast feeding must be weighed against the potential hazards to her, her fetus, or her infant. A patient should consult her transplant team immediately if she thinks she's pregnant.

Principal side effects:

These include, but are not limited to, reduced white blood cell and platelet counts, abnormal kidney function, fever, rash, headaches, and confusion.
